Neurofeedback & EEG Biofeedback

Neurofeedback & EEG Biofeedback Dictionary

Amplitude :
The maximum height of and EEG signal during one wave cycle, measured in microvolts. Like a piece of music, this is the volume of the signal.

Biofeedback :
A relaxation and training technique that teaches control of physiology such as blood pressure, sweat, heartbeat, muscle tension, skin temperature, breathing. Electronic monitors are used to allow an individual to observe physiological state and attempt to control it consciously.

EEG :
An electroencephalogram is a recording of the electrical activity of the brain. Electrode sensors are applied to a subjects scalp and the minute electrical pulses of the brain are monitored and amplified for observance via a computer or device. Considered a non invasive diagnostic tool and used for Neurofeedback / EEG Biofeedback training.

Electrode :
A device used to record an EEG signal. A small metal disc usually made up of gold or silver and attached to a wire and connecting terminal. Several electrodes are used to measure minute electrical pulses of the brain.

Frequency :
Number of cycles in a one second time interval for an electrical signal.

Impedance Meter :
A device that measures the resistance of electrode connections. Assist in indicating the quality of electrode connection and quality of EEG signal.

Neurofeedback :
Direct training of the brain that challenges the brain to better function - a form of Biofeedback. Electrode sensors are applied to a subjects scalp and the EEG signal from the brain is then monitored via a computer after the signal is first amplified. This signal is interpreted by software which provides immediate reward or challenge to the brain through the form of visual, audible or tactile feedback that is often presented as an engaging video game. This feedback is used to encourage the brain to operate at desired amplitudes and frequency ranges. Neurofeedback training has many therapeutic applications including ADHD, PTSD, Autism and more.
